Two men seeking a rented room enter the orbit of an eccentric family whose polished welcome conceals an unsettling atmosphere.
The story
Witold and Fuchs are searching for a room to rent when they encounter an eccentric family that welcomes them as though they were relatives. The hospitality seems polished, but the atmosphere is distinctly off: beneath appearances, nothing feels normal. Fuchs is an uncomplicated bon vivant, while Witold is an imaginative, strange, and inward-looking man. His mind is occupied by a quiet, intense passion for Lena, adding a personal fixation to the uneasy situation in which the two men find themselves.
