After his role model takes the signet ring he sought, master thief Frank Wieland spends six years in prison planning to get it back.
The story
At the start of his career, master thief Frank Wieland targets King Ludwig II’s signet ring, but his role model, Kara Moreni, takes it from him after he opens the safe. Frank serves six years in prison and uses the time to plan how to recover the ring. After his release, a mysterious client—later revealed as Bavarian Minister-President von Dollinger—offers five million euros for the ring, which he calls a key to power. Frank cannot pursue the job freely: his clumsy probation officer, Marie von Dollinger, is nearly always at his side. Unable to recruit professionals because they fear Moreni, Frank turns to a motley crew of amateur helpers.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The master thief Frank Wieland, at the beginning of his career, has his eye on King Ludwig II’s signet ring. But just as he has broken open the safe, his great role model, Kara Moreni, snatches the ring from him. Frank then serves a total of six years in prison for the break-in, which gives him plenty of time to devise an elaborate plan to get the signet ring back. After his release, Frank Wieland is approached by a client who is initially mysterious but later reveals himself as the Bavarian Minister-President von Dollinger. He offers Frank five million euros if he brings him the signet ring, which is a key to power. However, Frank is by no means free to put his plan into action and carry out the job. His pretty but extremely clumsy probation officer, Marie von Dollinger, is almost constantly at his side. Since no professional team can be assembled to support Frank for fear of Moreni, he turns to a motley crew of amateurs. The crew consists of the chubby acrobat Skippy “The Cat,” Max, a former star of a medical drama, and Billy, a computer whiz who suffers from agoraphobia. Lars and the blind Ande, both hopelessly addicted to betting, also offer their services as drivers. Rounding out the group are the three cousins Hannes, Jürgen, and Bernie, who are explosives experts of rather dubious ability. They do manage to break into Moreni’s house, but discover that the thief has since sold the ring. It is now at Neuschwanstein Castle, where the security measures make stealing it especially difficult. But since Wieland’s client won’t let up, Frank and his gang set to work on the difficult job, sneaking into the castle disguised as a folk-style live band. While Skippy rappels down from the ceiling of the hall where the ring is kept, Billy disables the alarm system. Wieland succeeds in taking the ring. Once again, Moreni surprises him, unwilling to let him have the signet ring. This time, however, he manages to swap it for a replica, which he leaves with her, so in the end everything works out well for Frank Wieland’s group after all.
