Full plot (contains spoilers)
NYU economics professor Rachel Chu travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, for his best friend's wedding. She quickly learns that Nick's family is incredibly wealthy, essentially royalty in Singapore. While navigating the lavish lifestyle of the Young family, Rachel faces opposition from Nick's mother, Eleanor, who disapproves of her. During the festivities, Rachel's friend Peik Lin helps her navigate the social minefield. After a series of events, including a confrontation with Nick's ex-girlfriend and a tense mahjong match with Eleanor, the truth about Rachel's parentage is revealed: she is the result of an affair and not the daughter of the man she believed was her father. Nick offers to leave his family for her, but Rachel initially refuses. However, after a final confrontation where she uses game theory to challenge Eleanor's stance, Nick proposes to her using Eleanor's ring, finally gaining the family's approval. The film ends with a celebration of their engagement.
