Full plot (contains spoilers)
A university professor, Alexandre Lenski, is arrested by the Soviet police because he is a Christian. His interrogation initially focuses on accusations of proselytizing, which he skillfully rebuts. Gradually, the pressure mounts, and one by one the people he might have relied on let him down. The same is true of everyone, right down to the church figures—Father Serge and Brother Jean—who are on the interrogators’ side. In the end, the professor kneels and recites his Creed before his torturers, then is taken to a psychiatric hospital.
