Full plot (contains spoilers)
The protagonist is a homeless man nicknamed “Crocodile” because of his “crocodile-like behavior.” He lives beneath a bridge over the Han River, making a living by taking money and valuables from people who have died by suicide and selling their corpses to their families. He can stay underwater for a relatively long time without needing to breathe. His only social connections are a little boy and an old man, Mr. Oh, who live with him. They have to endure his constant outbursts of anger, sometimes triggered by memories of his youth. One day, he saves Hyun-jung, a woman who has attempted suicide after being abandoned by her boyfriend. Afterward, Crocodile humiliates and sexually abuses her, but she puts up little resistance. When Crocodile is wrongfully arrested and accused of murder, Mr. Oh helps secure his release by identifying the real culprit as a witness. The culprit takes revenge on Mr. Oh by murdering him. Mr. Oh’s murderer is an accomplice of Hyun-jung’s former boyfriend. Hyun-jung and Crocodile kill the former boyfriend together. Hyun-jung and Crocodile have sex for the first time with the consent of both. The next day, Hyun-jung makes another suicide attempt, which Crocodile does not prevent. He also takes his own life.
