Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jacques and Martine, an ordinary bourgeois couple, invite two friends they have not seen for ten years to dinner: a successful writer and journalist and his wife, Charlotte, who is entirely devoted to his career. Also among the guests are Georges, a friend staying with them, and Fred, Martine’s brother, with his girlfriend, Marylin. Citing a traffic jam, the guest and his wife Charlotte arrive an hour and fifteen minutes late. In fact, the dinner itself is never shown at any point in the film, as the characters find themselves in various situations in the kitchen against a backdrop of criticism, disappointment, and resentment.
