Curling für Eisenstadt (2019)

The young tourism manager Vicky is a spoiled woman who has got ahead in life so far with the help of her father’s good reputation. Hubert Kapfensteiner is an influential winegrower. When Vicky makes a mistake during the presentation of a new advertising campaign for the agency she works for and unintentionally insults the mayor, her boss, Joe Baumgartner, fires her. She has also fallen out of favor with her father and now has to learn to stand on her own two feet. After a brief slump, she gets back on track and tries to bring the Women’s World Curling Championship to Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. However, a successful bid requires an Eisenstadt curling team; Vicky also knows nothing about the sport of curling and has to find the money for the entry fee and equipment. It seems like a hopeless undertaking. She does everything she can to put together her own women’s curling team. Federation president Robert Weber promises to make Eisenstadt the host city for the World Championship if her team can beat the national champions from Kitzbühel. The mayor is receptive to the plan, while her former boss, Joe Baumgartner, faces losing the contract to Vicky. Besides Vicky as skip, the team consists of her friend Melanie, a surveying technician; Emma, an employee of her father’s; and Geri, a surf instructor whom Vicky happens to meet while surfing. Her former boss Joe tries to sabotage her, including by getting her banned from the training rink. By contrast, she gets support from Hendl Kaiser, who sponsors the team and makes his hall available for training. He suggests the name Chicken Nugget Queens. Vicky manages to recruit former East German curler Petra Glewitz as their coach. The opposing team’s coach is former West German curler Silke von Staremberg, who prevented Glewitz from joining their combined team after reunification. After that, Glewitz never touched a curling stone again. When Glewitz initially wants to quit, Kaiser manages to bring her back to the team. A romance develops between the two. After Vicky has a one-night stand with David Kovac, whom Melanie had also had her eye on, Vicky and her friend fall out during the tournament against the Kitzbühel team. Melanie wants to throw in the towel and leave the team. After they make up, the Eisenstadt team continues the tournament. One of their stones breaks. Although the opposing team’s coach, Silke von Staremberg, gives them a defective replacement stone, the Eisenstadt team ultimately manages to win the tournament.
