After returning to Miami, Detective Bill Skims finds himself pursuing an international terrorist and a powerful explosive that is difficult to detect.
The story
After seven years away, Detective Bill Skims returns to Miami, where his colleague Mike is waiting. The pair are attacked by an armed gang but escape unharmed and capture one attacker, international terrorist Stephen Zantec. At Skims’s police-assigned home, he plays an audiocassette included with a welcome basket; Mike senses trouble, and they leave just before the house explodes. Information from Zantec leads them to Van Axel’s coastal estate, where Skims infiltrates a party and overhears Axel presenting potential buyers with the powerful, hard-to-detect XR4000 explosive. Skims is discovered but fights off Axel’s men.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After seven years away, Detective Bill Skims returns to Miami, where his colleague Mike is waiting for him. As they drive, the two are attacked by an armed gang but escape unharmed. They manage to capture one of the attackers: Stephen Zantec, an international terrorist. At the police station, Mike and Skims meet Captain Sam Shepard. Mike takes Skims to the home assigned to him by the police department. Skims finds a basket of fruit and an audiocassette as a welcome gift, and immediately puts the tape in the stereo. Mike, however, realizes something is wrong, and he and his partner quickly leave the house. A few seconds later, it explodes. Mike and Skims learn from Zantec that Van Axel is at an estate on the coast and plans to host a party. The two slip into the party, where Skims manages to overhear a business meeting in which Van Axel presents potential buyers with the XR4000, a powerful explosive that is difficult to detect. Skims is discovered, but manages to fight off Van Axel’s men. Meanwhile, Van Axel manages to demolish a building. Just before the explosion, the same piece of music that played before Skims’s house blew up can be heard. Lily records what happened and, together with Skims, analyzes the scene using her equipment. They figure out that the music contains ultrasonic tones that trigger the explosive, but they still have to determine where it has been planted. The two police officers attempt a nighttime raid on the facility and discover the explosive’s stockpile. However, Van Axel traps them by monitoring the building from a computer station. Mike manages to get out of the building, while Skims is caught in the explosion. Skims is presumed dead, but Lily notices something strange on her computers: it is Skims, who first appears inside a video game and then literally comes out of the computer. He has become a hologram. Chelo and Mike are initially incredulous, but eventually accept the new “virtual detective.” Meanwhile, Zantec is released thanks to Van Axel’s lawyers, and decides to kidnap Lily to blackmail Mike. The girl is taken to the Leba, Van Axel’s yacht. The “silent avenger” changes course, bringing the boat back into territorial waters, sends its location to the police, and defeats Van Axel’s men. After Mike foils one last trick devised by the criminal, the virtual Skims seems to become unwell at one point and then disappears. At the site of the explosion, the detective is found alive but unconscious, and resuscitating him causes his virtual alter ego to disappear. Skims steals an ambulance to reach his friends, but a police car intercepts him: it is Mike, Chelo, and Lily. Skims and Chelo kiss, while Mike and Lily end up directing traffic.
