A body pulled from a Swiss lake is passed from person to person, each with a possible motive—and doubts remain about its identity.
The story
After fisherman Paul Ernzer pulls the corpse of Jean-Louis Preminger from a Swiss lake, the body is transported by various means and passed among an unlikely succession of people: a trafficker, a gangster, a tramp, a gravedigger, an old cowboy, a young man, an elegant woman, and a lady-killer. Each person has a reason for having killed the dead man, but even the corpse’s identity is uncertain. Commissioner Guillaume is not prepared to swear that the body is Preminger’s, leaving the chain of motives—and the question of who has died—unsettled.
