An amnesiac man must navigate a shifting, nightmarish city to uncover his identity while hunted by a mysterious group of extraterrestrials.
The story
John Murdoch awakens in a hotel bathtub with total amnesia, only to find himself suspected of a ritualistic murder. As he flees the scene, he is pursued by both the police and a mysterious group known as the 'Strangers.' While attempting to uncover his true identity and clear his name, Murdoch discovers that the city he is in is a surreal, perpetually dark environment where the architecture can be physically rearranged. He must navigate this shifting landscape and evade the Strangers, who are revealed to be extraterrestrials experimenting on humans, while trying to find a way to a place called Shell Beach.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
John Murdoch awakens with amnesia in a hotel, finding a murdered woman and a bloody knife. He flees the scene, pursued by the police and a group of 'Strangers'—extraterrestrials living in human bodies who use 'tuning' to manipulate reality. Murdoch learns his name and that he has a wife, Emma, but soon discovers the city is a deep-space habitat where the Strangers experiment on humans to understand individuality. During a confrontation with the police, the truth of the city's nature is revealed. Murdoch and Inspector Bumstead attempt to reach a coastal town called Shell Beach, only to find it is a mere image on a wall. They break through the wall, revealing the city is a space station. The Strangers capture them, and Murdoch is forced to confront their collective memory. He eventually gains full mastery over his powers, defeats the Strangers' leader, and creates a real Shell Beach within the habitat. He ultimately finds Emma, who has been re-imprinted with new memories, and they begin a new life together as the city sees sunlight for the first time.
