After a boy emails Bill Gates seeking answers, a press-office employee pretends to be the billionaire, prompting the boy to persuade his mother to travel to Seattle.
The story
Since her husband’s death, Nika Berndssen has raised her son Oliver alone while supporting them with a small computer company. Oliver asks many questions, but Nika can answer only some, and her strain leaves him dissatisfied. He emails Bill Gates, though the message reaches the billionaire’s press office rather than Gates personally. An employee there breaks the rules and answers Oliver while pretending to be Gates. Convinced that the real Bill Gates has responded, Oliver persuades Nika to take him to Seattle to meet the software magnate.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Since her husband’s death, Nika Berndssen has been a single mother. Her child Oliver asks a lot of questions, but she can answer only some of them; quite often, she has no answer at all. This may also be because she is overwhelmed by the whole situation, as she earns the entire living for herself and her son with a small computer company. Eventually, Oliver has had enough of receiving mostly unsatisfying answers to his questions, so he sends an email to Bill Gates. It naturally doesn’t land in the billionaire’s personal inbox, but it does reach the relevant press office. When Oliver’s message is read there, an employee breaks the rules and pretends to be its intended recipient. Claiming to be the software magnate himself, employee John Lindquist replies to Oliver’s messages. Believing that Bill Gates has personally answered him, Oliver persuades his mother to travel with him to Seattle to meet Gates. Once they arrive in Washington, the two learn that it was only one of Bill Gates’s employees who had replied to Oliver’s messages.
