The story

Chef Michi Griesebach is preparing to open his new restaurant, La Duck, while dreading a review from critic Harry Dumont, whose earlier criticism dealt his career a serious blow. Michi has a history with Dumont, having had an affair with his wife years earlier. When Michi’s brother Volker is injured and hospitalized, Michi learns that Dumont’s daughter Helene wants therapy with Volker because of relationship problems. Hoping to influence the critic’s review, Michi pretends to be Volker and conducts Helene’s therapy sessions, seeing her at first as a potential romantic adventure.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Chef Michi Griesebach is on the verge of opening his new restaurant, “La Duck,” and dreads the review by restaurant critic Harry Dumont, whose criticism dealt his career a serious blow when he was starting out twelve years ago. Back then, Michi had an affair with Dumont’s wife, and ever since, he has continued to live as a womanizer. He has no contact with his daughter Alice and is currently having an affair with his brother Volker’s wife. Volker is a successful psychotherapist. When Volker is injured in a fall and has to go to the hospital, Michi happens to hear that Dumont’s daughter Helene wants to have therapy sessions with Volker because of relationship problems. Michi sees an opportunity to get insider information and influence Dumont’s review by pretending to be Volker. Michi conducts the therapy sessions in a rather unconventional way, but still manages to connect with Helene, whom he naturally also sees as a potential erotic adventure. But he falls in love with the critic’s daughter and starts to question some things about the way he has lived his life. He even gets in touch with Alice by phone. One evening, Helene happens to run into Michi at “La Duck,” where, to avoid being found out, he spontaneously passes himself off as Volker’s identical twin, Michi. They spend the night together. At her next therapy session, Helene tells him about Michi and also recognizes the loneliness in him. Michi talks himself down. His “brother” would never change and would only make her unhappy. Michi ends the therapy because Helene is in contact with his “brother.” A little later, Michi is found out when he visits Alice at the school where Helene teaches her. Michi then visits Dumont at his home, and the two talk about their enmity, their relationships with women, and their daughters. Dumont realizes that he has paid too little attention to Helene and too much to his work. They both go to see Helene at school because Harry wants to apologize. When she realizes that Michi has also had a hand in this, she simply rides away on her bicycle. Michi turns his attention back to opening his restaurant and changes the menu; he wants everything to be done without any restaurant frills. The evening goes well, and eventually Harry and Helene arrive too. Helene pretends she is meeting Michi for the first time and says she wants to find out for herself who he is.
