Walter Uhl schemes to improve his own prospects by arranging a wealthy match for his sister Lia.

The story

Walter Uhl, a shopkeeper’s son, is a morally corrupt young man who takes charge of his sister Lia’s future. He ensures that her poor fiancé, Mr. Funke, is innocently sent to prison, then matches the now-unattached Lia with a wealthy bon vivant. Walter wants more for his sister—and for himself—and hopes the prospective marriage will bring him money. The source describes the wealthy man as no more virtuous than Walter, giving this hoped-for arrangement a troubling edge.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Walter Uhl, the son of a shopkeeper, is a morally depraved young man whose actions make him responsible for much wrongdoing. First, he ensures that his sister Lia’s rather poor fiancé, Mr. Funke, is innocently sent behind bars. Walter wants more for his sister—and therefore for himself, too. He then matches the now-unattached young woman with a wealthy bon vivant who has no more character than Walter himself, but who, as Lia’s future husband, promises—Walter hopes—a welcome flood of money. But when this playboy one day leaves Walter’s sister, Walter, feeling cheated out of the lucrative source of income he had hoped for, flies into a rage and promptly kills him. Full of remorse, however, Walter turns himself in to the authorities, and Funke, whose innocence has been proven and who is then released from prison, can finally marry his Lia.
