Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the beginning of the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht invades Poland, destroying the childhood of 14-year-old Walerjan Wróbel as well. He lives with his parents and siblings on a farm in the occupied country. At 16, he is deported to Germany, where he is forced to work on a farm in Bremen. Overcome with homesickness, he tries to escape, but is caught. Out of desperation and in the hope that he will be sent back to his homeland as punishment, he sets fire to a barn. He is arrested and transferred to Neuengamme concentration camp. After nine months of hard labor under terrible conditions, a court in Bremen sentences the still-underage Wróbel to death.
