The story
A disgraced former firefighter enters Berlin’s burning TV Tower to save the woman he loves.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a cable fire, the Berlin TV Tower is engulfed in flames. Several people die in the first explosion. They are hurled out of the tower by the force of the blast or burn to death. When the restaurant level catches fire, people desperately try to reach the elevators. The manager and the staff try to calm the visitors and direct them to the rescue platform. Some make it onto the platform, but then desperately run back into the tower. Tom, who wants to rescue his great love, Katja Strasser, from the tower—she works in the restaurant there—manages to obtain personal protective equipment and a breathing apparatus and make his way into the tower. After several people manage to get into the only elevator during a struggle, it descends. Another explosion damages the elevator’s drive motor. The elevator crashes, killing everyone on board. The drive motor breaks through the ceiling and destroys the stairwell. Several firefighters die when the motor hits, but Tom and Henning survive and manage to get upstairs, into the tower. The collapse of the ceiling blocks the way to the rescue platform, burying and killing several people, so all escape routes are now cut off. Seventeen people are trapped by the fire. The film’s main character is Tom, a former firefighter who was dishonorably discharged because his former boss, Fire Chief Horst Strasser, blamed him for his son’s death. After many futile attempts to put out the fire, Fire Chief Horst Strasser, who is in charge of the operation, sees only one way to extinguish it: he plans to detonate the carbon dioxide gas cylinders, which are actually meant to protect the computer equipment on the upper floors, so that the carbon dioxide spreads through the tower and smothers the fire. To set the charges, Strasser and Tom have to go together to the upper floors of the tower. But the idea comes from Tom; the plan works, and most of the people are rescued.
