Full plot (contains spoilers)
Thirty-one-year-old Tristan loses his wife, Kerstin, in a car accident. He stands in front of her coffin and remembers the group of friends he used to spend every day with in the 1980s. The 1980s: Tristan is 15 and has a lot of problems. His parents want to get divorced, and he is in love with Kerstin, his best friend. His friends cannot help him because they are struggling with problems of their own. Later, when Tristan moves to another city with his mother, Kerstin visits him and they kiss. At the end, Tristan leaves the church and walks toward the other mourners. Shortly before the credits, the 15-year-old Tristan is seen sitting on a bench with his group of friends (including “Kerstin”). During the credits, we learn that some of Tristan’s friends went on to have very successful careers. One of his friends became sporting director of a second-division club, while another runs a commodities corporation in Caracas, Venezuela. We also learn that some of the friends in the group got married and had children.
