An arranged royal marriage is meant to unite two principalities in their response to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
The story
Barbara, Imperial Countess of Dingelstädt-Ingolstein, is to marry Hereditary Prince Ulrich Theodor of Heiligenstadt in a match arranged by her aunt and his mother under pressure from citizens of both principalities. With foot-and-mouth disease already breaking out in Dingelstädt-Ingolstein, the citizens regard uniting the principalities as the only way to respond effectively. To prevent the disease from spreading to Heiligenstadt, a ban on kissing is imposed across both territories. The marriage and the sweeping restriction place the two principalities’ effort to contain the outbreak at the center of the story.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The marriage between Barbara, Imperial Countess of Dingelstädt-Ingolstein, and Hereditary Prince Ulrich Theodor of Heiligenstadt is arranged by Barbara’s aunt, Princess Felicia, and Ulrich Theodor’s mother, the Princess of Heiligenstadt, under pressure from the citizens of both principalities. They see the union of the two principalities as the only way to take effective action against the foot-and-mouth disease that has broken out in Dingelstädt-Ingolstein. To prevent it from spreading to Heiligenstadt, a ban on kissing—the ban that gives the play its title—is eventually imposed across both principalities. It can be maintained only until the lovestruck hereditary prince himself no longer obeys it.
