The story
On the day Hitler comes to power, the Jewish Glickstein family gathers in Berlin for dinner together. The gathering exposes a deep divide among the family’s young members. Nineteen-year-old Leah tells her parents that she intends to leave for Palestine, while her eighteen-year-old brother Michael wants to join his friends at the Nazis’ torchlight procession to pay tribute to what he sees as a new era. Their conflicting plans and political sympathies bring the outside upheaval into the family’s private dinner.
