He enters the house and asks Lona to sing it again; she promises to do so and visits him the following day. Von Rotfels, jealous after learning something about the visit, follows Lona when she leaves Körner’s home. Their argument leads to the end of their engagement, and Lona’s parents also cast her out. At the engagement party for Lona Sehring and Hans von Rotfels, she performs “The Song of Colombine,” a composition by an unknown composer. During her performance, a young but terminally ill musician is standing outside the house and immediately recognizes his melody. He enters the house and Lona’s room. Naturally, she is startled when she encounters him there. But the young musician, whose name is Körner, manages to calm her and asks her to sing the song for him once more. Lona promises to do so, and the following day she visits him and sings it for him. Von Rotfels, who has found out something and is jealous, follows her as she leaves the house, and they quarrel: he breaks off their engagement, and her parents also throw her out of the house. In her distress, she returns to Körner. He marries her on his deathbed to save her honor. Just a few hours later, he succumbs to his serious illness. Körner’s friend, the elderly Blaamer, who is also a musician, helps Lona and trains her to become a singer. Under the stage name “Lola Lees,” she performs as “Colombine.” Her former fiancé, von Rotfels, is among the audience. The two quarrel again, until Blaamer steps in to calm things down and explains the true circumstances to von Rotfels. The two finally get together after all.
