A Viennese photographer joins Hans Hass’s Red Sea expedition, where an ambitious documentary project reshapes the voyage.
The story
Hans Hass and his best friend prepare for a diving expedition, and Hass seeks an assistant. The job goes to Lotte Baierl, a young photographer from Vienna. When Hass approaches a film producer to finance the trip, the producer sets a condition: the expedition documentary must be made as a feature film, with Lotte participating as a pretty young woman to attract a broad audience. Hass gives up his principle of not taking women on his expeditions. Their voyage across the Red Sea is focused on searching for a great white shark that Hass hopes to be the first to capture on camera.
