Das Papst-Attentat (2008)

Mystical signs in the sky, first in 1928 on Portugal’s southern coast, later in Los Angeles, California, and finally in Cologne during the Pope’s visit on his tour of Germany—the Vatican security men Conti and Naldini have been warned. But the BKA dismisses their concerns as “superstitious mumbo jumbo.” In fact, however, the former Foreign Legionnaire and marksman Rami Hamdan, known to everyone only as “the Surgeon,” has been hired for €25 million to shoot the Pope while he is greeting the crowds. Hamdan takes up position on the roof of one of the surrounding apartment buildings and sets the necessary preparations in motion. Meanwhile, signs that an assassination attempt on Pope Clement XXIII may be planned grow stronger, and Stertz and Dabrock of the BKA now also have the special task force keep a close eye on the Pope. Just one second before Hamdan’s fatal shots, Andrea Conti shouts a warning, and the Pope’s bodyguards move into position, intercepting the deadly shots. The Pope is saved, making another conclave unnecessary. Finally, at the hospital, Naldini is revealed to have been involved in a conspiracy hatched from within their own ranks.
