A shy loner takes home a strange creature that can magically grant his wishes.

The story

One Saturday, the shy, insecure Mr. Taschenbier encounters a strange, half-height creature at the weekly market. Its humanlike appearance and the day of the week lead him to conclude that it is a Sams. When it calls him “Papa,” he takes it home, but soon finds it a nuisance and tries to get rid of it. Then he discovers that the Sams can magically fulfill wishes. Blue spots on its face grant a wish when it is spoken aloud, and Taschenbier’s wishes lead to funny disasters that usually require another wish to undo.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

One Saturday, the shy and insecure Mr. Taschenbier, who lives alone, comes across a strange, half-height creature at the weekly market. It looks human, but is not human. From the day of the week, he concludes that it must be a Sams. The Sams calls him “Papa,” so he takes it home; but since it becomes a nuisance, he initially tries to get rid of it, until he discovers that the Sams can magically make wishes come true. It has blue “wish spots” on its face, each of which grants a wish as soon as it is spoken aloud. Taschenbier’s wishes lead to numerous funny disasters, which can usually only be undone with another wish. When the spots begin to run out, Taschenbier wishes for a wish-granting machine, which works perfectly until he and his best friend Mon, whom he has let in on the secret, make two contradictory wishes at the same time. The conflicting wishes destroy the machine and leave the Sams exhausted and close to death; only the last wish spot can save it. The Sams knows how to get new wish spots, but turns the process around so that their roles are reversed: now Taschenbier has the spots, and the Sams can use them. The Sams becomes jealous because Taschenbier has fallen completely in love with his new colleague, Margarete März, and tries through its wishes to prevent the two of them from getting closer in various ways. Taschenbier fights one of these wishes with all his strength, despite his experience with the machine and the Sams’s warnings. It takes so much out of him that he eventually collapses and can only be brought back to life by a kiss from Margarete März. The Sams realizes it was wrong to wish against love, and from then on the three live together as a family.
