An industrial magnate leads an incognito double life among ordinary people until illness and factory troubles bring his two worlds into collision.

The story

Eberhard Bruggs, a man of humble origins, has risen from locksmith’s apprentice to ruler of an industrial empire. Despite his position, he has never become comfortable in high society. While his family has adapted to their elevated circumstances, Eberhard spends his days off incognito among ordinary people, where he feels at home and can offer help. His carefully divided life becomes difficult when he falls seriously ill during one of these retreats, just as trouble develops at his factory. These crises put his hidden identity at risk and bring the contrasting parts of his life into conflict.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eberhard Bruggs is the ruler of an industrial empire. A man of humble origins, he worked his way up from being a locksmith’s apprentice, and now everyone dances to his tune. Bruggs, however, has never grown accustomed to his high position, and he cannot stand so-called high society. While his family has adapted completely, Eberhard leads a double life. On his days off, he mingles with ordinary people incognito. Here, he is among people he understands and can help. His life only becomes complicated when he falls seriously ill during one of his retreats and problems arise at his factory, causing his double life to be exposed. His family now realizes what he is truly missing and takes care of him, so that he will no longer need a second identity.
