Full plot (contains spoilers)
A young sculptor meets and falls in love with Norina, a beautiful woman. She becomes his muse. When a prince commissions him to create a statue of the Virgin Mary for a new chapel, he uses her as his model. The sculptor is so captivated by his work that he kneels before it and begins to pray. Norina, who is not at all pleased by this, throws the statue into the nearby river out of jealousy. The chapel is to be consecrated, but neither the sculptor nor the statue arrives in time. However, after the sculptor arrives late, the statue comes to life, emerges from the river, and makes its way to the chapel, taking its designated place. Standing before it, the sculptor collapses dead.
