Full plot (contains spoilers)
Journalist Bas Haan is initially convinced that tax and legal adviser Ernest Louwes is innocent. Louwes is in prison for the murder of widow Jacqueline Wittenberg, committed in Deventer in September 1999. Haan successfully exposes the flaws in the initial evidence. But when Louwes is nevertheless convicted on the basis of disputed DNA evidence, media personality Maurice de Hond becomes involved in the case in 2005 and, through a highly publicized media offensive, identifies “handyman” De Jong as an alternative culprit. Bas Haan decides to investigate what he believes really happened. Meanwhile, De Jong’s life has been seriously damaged by De Hond’s accusations. How do you defend yourself against a media machine like that?
