The story

Stoney Jackson Cooper resigned from the Los Angeles Police Department in disgrace and moved to New York City to work as a private investigator. He returns to LA at the behest of his friend Sam Goodwin, whose granddaughter has been the victim of a serial killer known as the "X Murderer", so-called because they carve the letter "X" into the heads of their victims. Upon returning to LA, Cooper is swiftly met with hostility by his former captain Otto Hoxley, having left the force in disgrace years prior.
