The story

Kurt Kuenne and Andrew Bagby were close friends who grew up in California. After Bagby's life was tragically cut short following a breakup with a woman named Shirley Jane Turner, Kuenne began a project to document Bagby's life. The film explores the investigation into Bagby's death and the subsequent legal battle over his son, Zachary. As Kuenne gathers footage and interviews friends and family, the film serves as a tribute to Bagby and a warning about the consequences of judicial decisions in cases involving domestic violence and child safety.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Kurt Kuenne and Andrew Bagby were close friends from San Jose, California. In 2001, Bagby entered a relationship with Shirley Turner, a woman much older than him. After they broke up, Turner traveled to Pennsylvania where Bagby was found shot to death. While Turner was held in Canada, she revealed she was pregnant with Bagby's son, Zachary. A legal battle ensued over custody of the child. Due to a perceived failure in the Canadian legal system regarding bail and safety, Turner was released and eventually committed a murder-suicide, killing herself and her 13-month-old son. Kuenne's film documents the lives of both father and son, the investigation into the crime, and the subsequent advocacy by the Bagby family to reform Canadian laws. The film concludes with reflections from those who knew the pair, serving as a memorial for the boy who never knew his father.
