During the Nazi occupation of Belarus, a group of Jewish brothers leads a daring resistance to save their people from extermination.
The story
In August and September 1941, following the Nazi invasion of the USSR, German forces begin systematically exterminating the Jewish population across western Soviet Union. Among the survivors are the Bielski brothers: Tuvia, Zus, Asael, and Aron. After their parents are killed by local forces under German orders, the brothers flee to the Naliboki forest. There, they encounter other Jewish escapees and take them under their protection. Tuvia establishes a community where refugees must work to survive, raiding local farms for supplies and staging raids against the Germans and their collaborators while constantly moving their camp to avoid discovery.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1941, the Bielski brothers—Tuvia, Zus, Asael, and Aron—flee to the Naliboki forest after their parents are murdered by local forces under Nazi orders. They begin sheltering other Jewish escapees, establishing a community where everyone must work and pregnancies are forbidden. The group raids farms for supplies and stages raids against German forces. Tuvia, seeking to minimize casualties, often clashes with his younger brother Zus, who favors more militant operations. Eventually, Zus leaves to join Soviet partisans, forming an arrangement where they protect the Jewish camp in exchange for supplies. Tuvia's group endures a brutal winter of sickness and starvation, facing an attempted mutiny by a bully named Arkady, whom Tuvia kills. As the Germans prepare a major attack on Passover, the group prepares to evacuate. A delaying force led by Asael is caught by German infantry and a Panzer III tank; only Asael and one other member survive to rejoin the group. Just as the situation seems hopeless, Zus and his force desert the Soviet partisans to rejoin the Jewish group and assault the Germans from the rear. The film concludes with intertitles stating the partisans lived in the forest for two more years, growing to 1,200 people, before the brothers eventually emigrated to the United States.
