Full plot (contains spoilers)
The young doctor Malu Barstedt meets the attractive and charming Hannes Jäger at a party. But the friendship that develops proves deceptive, and despite falling for him, Malu begins to have doubts. For one thing, everything is moving a little too fast for her, and for another, the man is a puzzle to her. At their first trivial argument, Hannes withdraws in a huff and does not contact her for days. When she discovers that Hannes seems to be hiding something from her and is clearly lying to her, she decides to end the relationship. She tells him so in no uncertain terms, but when she goes to bed that evening, she finds Hannes there. He threatens her and genuinely frightens her. To be better prepared to defend herself physically against Hannes, she starts taking a self-defense class, but barely has she set off for home when a car follows her and tries to run her down. She then turns to the police. There, Malu discovers that no one named Hannes Jäger is registered as living in Berlin, and the photos of him have disappeared from her phone. She therefore has no evidence of stalking, and the police can do nothing more for her. Malu’s ordeal now intensifies dramatically: the next day, Hannes turns up at the clinic where she works, claiming to be an emergency patient. Since she can find nothing medically wrong with him, she wants to send him away. Unexpectedly, Hannes stabs himself in the hand with a pair of scissors in front of her and tells Malu’s colleagues that she attacked him. After she also receives very negative reviews online as a doctor, the clinic terminates her employment. In her fragile mental state, she also falls out with her best friend Sandra, leaving her completely isolated. It is not long before Hannes harasses her again at her apartment. She contacts Inspector Lehmann once more, and Lehmann advises her to stay with a friend or move into a hotel. Before she can do so, Malu discovers that Hannes has been in her apartment again. This time, he has decorated everything with white roses. She finds an obituary for herself, and someone has killed her cat and displayed it conspicuously on the balcony. In a panic, she turns to her friend Sandra, but when they go to her apartment together, everything has disappeared again. The friends have barely “celebrated” their reconciliation at a restaurant when Hannes arrives with his new fiancée, Nicole, and claims Malu still owes him 5,000 euros that she borrowed from him. Sandra then takes Malu back to her apartment. Malu knows that the police cannot act against her tormentor until he commits a direct criminal offense. So she takes the “fight back by going on the offensive” approach and meets Hannes at his apartment. Sandra is in on the plan and is supposed to call the police if Malu has not checked in within an hour. Once Malu arrives at Hannes’s place, it does not take him long to see through her plan. He quickly injects her with a sedative, takes her to the apartment of Nicole, his currently submissive girlfriend, which is right next door to his own, and ties her to the bed. While Nicole is supposed to keep watch over Malu, Hannes goes looking for Sandra, whom he suspects is waiting in the car in the parking lot, but he cannot find her there. Sandra calls the police, but by then they can no longer find Malu in Hannes’s apartment. The officers leave without having accomplished anything. Hannes then humiliates Malu severely and makes it unmistakably clear that her life belongs to him alone. When Nicole realizes that Hannes does not desire her at all, and that he has arranged everything solely for Malu, she tries to kill him with a knife. He immediately turns the weapon on her and cuts her carotid artery. Malu uses the struggle to escape, but since Hannes has taken the precaution of disabling the elevator in the high-rise, she can only flee to the roof. Hannes finds her there shortly afterward. With no way out, she provokes her pursuer, who moves toward her just as she had hoped, and she uses one of the self-defense moves she has recently learned to send him over the roof’s edge and plunging down. His subsequent fate remains uncertain. At the end, at Malu’s new workplace, his bird of prey is seen landing some distance away.
