The story

Nine-year-old Mathilde lives with her mother, while keeping a tender bond with her father through frequent phone calls; he does not have custody of her. Mathilde’s mother experiences what the article calls a gentle form of madness, leaving the girl to manage difficult day-to-day situations. One day, her mother gives her a cage containing a little owl. The owl begins to speak, though Mathilde alone can hear it, and becomes her confidante. With compassion for her mother and help from the owl, Mathilde comes up with unconventional plans to make ordinary life work amid the improbable situations her mother creates.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mathilde is a nine-year-old girl who lives alone with her mother, but she often talks on the phone with her father, with whom she shares a tender bond. For unclear reasons, he does not have custody of her, all the more so because her mother suffers from a gentle form of madness that Mathilde has to manage from day to day. One day, Mathilde’s mother gives her a cage with a little little owl inside. In a supernatural turn of events, the owl begins to speak and becomes the girl’s confidante; Mathilde is the only one who can hear it. Armed with deep compassion for her mother and precocious maturity, Mathilde devises outlandish plans, with the owl’s help, to make ordinary life fit the improbable situations her mother keeps plunging her into.
