Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is set in Copenhagen in the 1930s. At the center of the story is the boy Gustav Adolf, through whose eyes we experience the working-class family and the world outside the home. The family is close-knit, and Gustav Adolf especially idolizes his father, Axel. Before his eyes, however, Axel is unmasked and turns out to be a far more pathetic person than the great hero of the Pampas he wants to be seen as.
