Full plot (contains spoilers)
The relationship between theater director Robert and his girlfriend Marie, a pediatrician, is in deep crisis. After his father dies of cancer—a father with whom Robert had only recently gotten back in touch—Robert embarks on a disastrous journey into self-destruction. Despite his great love for Marie, he no longer sleeps with her. Instead, he repeatedly turns to prostitutes. The pregnant Marie catches on and eventually learns that Robert is involved with none other than Laura, an HIV-positive prostitute whose son, who is also ill, Marie has been treating for some time. Despite all the humiliation—after losing her unborn child and making a second suicide attempt—Marie is willing to fight for their love. She soon realizes that Robert is the only one who can share her pain. So she puts all her hopes in a fresh start. But Robert has never learned how to express his feelings, and even seeing a psychologist has not changed that.
