A stubborn older man’s planned mountain trip takes an unexpected turn when a runaway teenager turns up in his camper van.

The story

For health reasons, Wilhelm Schürmann is expected to change his way of life shortly before his 75th birthday: he is to move in with his daughter Bettina and temporarily give up his driver’s license. Instead, he sets off in his old camper van, hoping to retrace the mountain holiday route he once traveled with his late wife. He soon discovers sixteen-year-old Felix in the van; Felix has run away rather than spend the weekend with his father. Wilhelm tries to shake him off, but Felix sees through his tricks and won’t give up his ride.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

For health reasons, Wilhelm Schürmann is supposed to change his accustomed way of life overnight shortly before his 75th birthday, which he isn’t looking forward to at all. He is to move in with his daughter Bettina and, at least for the time being, give up his driver’s license. So the strong-willed old man takes off in his old camper van. He doesn’t get far, however, because sixteen-year-old Felix, who doesn’t want to spend the weekend with his father, has also run away and is now in Wilhelm’s camper van. Wilhelm wants to get rid of the teenager as quickly as possible: he had planned to retrace the mountain holiday route he used to take with his now-deceased wife and lose himself in memories. He tries several times to shake Felix off with various tricks. But Felix isn’t about to give up his ride without a fight, and sees through Wilhelm’s schemes. Eventually, Wilhelm realizes that his travel plans are unfolding differently from what he had expected. Meanwhile, Wilhelm’s son Martin and Felix’s single mother have also joined forces and are following the two of them. On their journey, the mismatched duo of Wilhelm and Felix encounter internal conflicts as well as kind-hearted people who help bring things to a good end. For instance, they attend a Balkan wedding they had rescued shortly beforehand, or are waved through by a good-natured police officer after a fuel theft. When they reach the mountain, Wilhelm reminisces about his late wife, while at the same time his children and Felix’s mother come together peacefully in the alpine hut.
