A German chief inspector’s first case with the Athens police is a singer’s murder, amid strained relations with his new colleagues.

The story

German chief inspector Max Richter begins work with the Athens police, drawn to the city by family ties: his mother was Greek, and his sister lives there. His first case is the murder of a singer. Cooperation with his Greek colleagues is difficult at first, with prejudices on both sides. Richter must also investigate an allegation of corruption within the police, while the fact that his new colleague, Chief Inspector Petros Makropoulos, is dating his sister makes the work more complicated.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Max Richter, a German chief inspector, begins his duties with the Athens police. Family ties—his mother was Greek and his sister lives in Athens—have brought him here. His first case is the murder of a singer. At first, working with his Greek colleagues proves difficult, since there are prejudices on both sides. Richter also has to investigate a corruption allegation against the Greek police, and the fact that his new colleague, Chief Inspector Petros Makropoulos, is in a relationship with his sister does not make the job any easier. As the murder investigation progresses, Richter becomes increasingly sure that Makropoulos is not the one he should be keeping an eye on. It is his new boss, Chief Superintendent Ritsos. Ritsos is working with Victoria Pappas, who abuses her charitable organization to arrange illegal arms deals and generously pays off Greek police officers to help her. A young Greek man, Vaggelis Karadimas, is suspected of killing the singer Sofia because he was friends with her and fled her apartment at the time of the crime. The commissioners are increasingly realizing that the two cases—the murder and the arms deals—are connected: Makropoulos’s daughter Eleni, a dedicated television journalist, reports on the leukemia of Karadimas’s little brother, who urgently needs treatment. But they have no money left for further tests or the life-saving bone marrow transplant. So Vaggelis plans to blackmail Victoria Pappas with stolen shipping documents that prove the arms smuggling. Pappas, however, refuses to give in and sends the corrupt police officers to silence Karadimas. But the bullet intended for him hits the singer instead, and she dies.
