Full plot (contains spoilers)

Thirteen-year-old Julia lives in Berlin with her father. With the summer holidays approaching, he takes her to her mother, who lives in a small village in the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic. At first, Julia is not very enthusiastic about her father’s plan, but she nevertheless enjoys a lovely holiday with her mother when a German traveling circus arrives in the village. Julia takes a particular liking to Joschka, the circus bear. When he wrecks the local village shop and is consequently marked for shooting by a hunter, Julia fights to protect him. She runs away with the circus children and the bear to get him to safety. The adults from the village join the circus troupe in searching for the children. When the bear wanders away from the group of children and comes face to face with the hunter, the hunter is startled and suffers a hunting accident. The children arrive and help the injured hunter, who spares the bear in return. The children, the bear, and the hunter return together to the adults in the village. There, the villagers reach an agreement with the circus troupe over the wrecked shop. After a well-attended performance, the circus moves on. Julia, who has become friends with the circus director’s son, is picked up by her father.
