A remote mountain weather-station job sparks a dangerous rivalry during a winter of isolation.

The story

In 1922, a weather observer is expected to spend the winter alone at a remote high-mountain station, supplied for the season and connected to the outside world only by telegraph. After the previous observer, Jetzler, loses his mind and is involved in a tragic accident, the station is to be staffed by a married couple. Unemployed Joseph Manser hastily marries pregnant Lena to secure the position. Gregor Kreuzpointner, a former Austro-Hungarian officer with wartime experience in the Dolomites, believes Manser has unfairly taken the job. He sets out to make the mountain’s first winter ascent and prove that the position should have been his.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1922, when the story takes place, a weather observer has to spend the entire winter alone on a high mountain, with supplies. Throughout the long winter, he is cut off from the rest of the world; his only contact with the outside is by telegraph line. After a tragic accident involving the previous weather observer, Jetzler, who had lost his mind, the remote weather station is to be staffed by a married couple. Joseph Manser is unemployed and hastily marries the pregnant Lena in order to get the job. Gregor Kreuzpointner, a former Austro-Hungarian officer with wartime experience in the Dolomites, feels that Manser has cheated him. He then attempts the mountain’s first-ever winter ascent to prove to the world that the position is rightfully his. He reaches the summit, where a fight to the death between the men and the woman inevitably ensues.
