Full plot (contains spoilers)
Franz König Sr., also known as the Blunzen King, is a grumpy master butcher from the Weinviertel. For many years, he has run a run-down farm with its own slaughterhouse and an inn, together with Rösli, the good soul of the household. The food inspector threatens to shut them down. König Sr. plans to hand the business over to his son, Franzl. But Franzl secretly dreams of traveling around the world on his motorcycle. At a primary-school reunion, he runs into his former classmate Charlotte, who is vegan. He spends a wild night with her, and Charlotte becomes pregnant by Franzl. Together, they want to turn the butcher’s shop and inn into an “organic grain station,” in keeping with the motto, “If you don’t keep up with the times, the times will pass you by.” But the idea is anathema to the Blunzen King. When Franz König accidentally finds out about it, he faints and ends up in the hospital. He wants nothing more to do with his son. Rösli has little understanding for his behavior, and so she temporarily moves in with her sister. After being discharged from the hospital, Franz is initially skeptical about the changes to his establishment, but gradually warms to the new ideas. He reconciles with Rösli, as well as with his son, to whom he gives his wife’s rings. The film ends just before Franz Jr. proposes to Charlotte.
