A prosecutor reopens a murder case after evidence links it to another killing Gehring could not have committed.
The story
Hans Werner Gehring has spent nine years in prison for murder while insisting he is innocent. After he attempts suicide in prison, prosecutor Julia Stein takes an interest in his case and begins investigating. She finds parallels between his conviction and another unsolved murder in a neighboring town, one that Gehring could not have committed because he was already incarcerated. Stein enlists forensic psychologist Martin Bach and local investigator Jürgen Lorenz to help trace the connection. Their inquiries bring them to brothers Kai and Frank Wegner, while the growing certainty that Gehring is not the killer raises urgent concerns for Lorenz about his daughter Natalie.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hans Werner Gehring was sentenced to a long prison term for murder nine years ago, despite always insisting that he was innocent. When he attempts suicide in prison, prosecutor Julia Stein becomes interested in his case and begins investigating. She discovers parallels with another unsolved murder in a neighboring town to the scene of the crime—one Gehring could not have committed, since he was already in prison at the time. With the help of forensic psychologist Martin Bach and local investigator Jürgen Lorenz, Stein tracks down the Wegner brothers, Kai and Frank. Once it becomes clear to everyone involved that Gehring cannot be the murderer, Lorenz fears for his daughter Natalie’s life. When Frank Wegner tries to pick Natalie up from school, he is arrested on strong suspicion of murder. Finally, in a direct confrontation with psychologist Martin Bach, his brother Kai confesses to committing the murders.
