Full plot (contains spoilers)
Police officer Martin Breiler and his colleague Lorenz are called to figure skater Katarina Witt’s home because of a noise complaint. Martin is immediately fascinated by her. The next day, when he tells his wife, Sabine, and their children, Laura and Tobias, about meeting Katarina, they persuade him to ask her for tickets to her ice show, “Summernight on Ice.” He goes to see her and gets her promise that the tickets will be waiting at the box office on the day of the show. The encounter with the famous figure skater has made a deep impression on the young police officer and completely upends his life. He is not only deeply impressed by Katarina as a woman; her way of life, and the fact that money seems to be no object, also captivate him. When he learns that Katarina was stalked several years earlier, he uses this as an opportunity to get closer to her and appoints himself her personal protector. He gets hold of one of the artist’s swimsuits and leads her to believe that her former stalker has become active again. Katarina gratefully accepts his help, and Martin is hardly ever away from her side. Breiler’s wife, Sabine, is concerned by how much her husband has changed and confronts him with her suspicion that another woman is involved—namely, Katarina Witt. Martin flies into a rage, completely overreacts, and moves out of the marital home. With the money the couple had borrowed to build a house together, he buys himself a convertible. On his first drive, he imagines Katarina sitting beside him and talking to him. Sabine seeks help from Justus Sonnleitner, a friend they share who is also Martin’s superior. Justus is convinced that Martin is spiraling into a delusion and that his love for Katarina is one-sided. Sabine finds this hard to believe. She wants to save her marriage and continues fighting for her husband. Meanwhile, Martin continues to secretly watch Katarina and acts as though they are together when he is around other people. One day, when the figure skater hears unsettling noises in her house, she calls Martin. When she hears his cell phone ringing nearby, she suddenly understands what is going on and realizes that Martin has been deceiving her. She informs the police. On the day of the ice show, Martin goes to collect his ticket at the box office, but Sabine has taken it. Martin nevertheless manages to get into the ice rink. When he approaches his family, Sabine tells him that, under the circumstances, she does not want to watch the show with him and the children. Shortly afterward, Sabine visits Katarina in her dressing room and tries to make it clear to the figure skater that Martin is her husband and will come back to her. Katarina can only reply that she has not the slightest interest in Sabine’s husband. Martin, who has meanwhile dressed up in a polar bear costume and is standing at the edge of the ice, throws the stolen swimsuit onto the ice. Katarina had told him that this was a sign from the stalker that he was nearby and would not give up. Martin hopes this will draw Katarina closer to him, as fear returns to her life. When the police intervene and search for the culprit, the young officer manages to escape. He goes straight to Katarina’s house, convinced that he and Katarina are meant for each other. They exchange words—then Sabine and the children suddenly appear on the terrace, and Martin’s superior, Justus Sonnleitner, is with them too. Their attempt to bring Martin back to reality fails. Unnoticed, Martin’s colleague Lorenz has also arrived, and in the ensuing confusion Martin is shot. Martin Breiler sits with a vacant stare on a bench in the park of a psychiatric clinic, while Sabine and the children swim in the lake.
