Full plot (contains spoilers)
Theo Farina is a confirmed bachelor until he meets Helene, the daughter of nursery owner Barbock. He promptly proposes to her, and her father agrees to the match. On his wedding day, however, his carriage horse eats the Florentine hat belonging to the beautiful Pamela, who had been walking in the woods with her lover. Afraid that her husband, Sarabant, will discover her affair if he sees the chewed-up hat, she demands that Farina get her an identical one. Farina refuses at first, but then agrees when her lover threatens to shoot him. As the wedding celebrations go on, Farina rushes from shop to shop and visits people who have bought such a hat; at one point, he is even mistaken for a famous singer. Since his bride’s family also causes plenty of confusion, the entire wedding party eventually ends up at his neighbor’s house—who, unbeknownst to Farina, is Sarabant. Drunk, Farina tells him about the beautiful woman whose hat his horse ate and her lover. Sarabant then decides to kill them both, as they are still at Farina’s house. Amid the confusion, a wedding gift appears. To Farina’s surprise, it is a Florentine hat given to him by his uncle Florian. He gives the hat to Pamela, thereby resolving her problem.
