mini|links|The golden ball lands in the pond at Favorite Palace in Rastatt. Princess Sophie celebrates her 18th birthday and, at her father’s insistence, is expected to marry a rich prince to save the crumbling kingdom from ruin. Unsure what to do, she places her hopes in the legacy of her late mother, whose life was shrouded in secrets: a golden ball that is meant to help the princess make the difficult decision with its magical powers. While playing, however, the gift falls into the palace pond. An enchanted Frog King promises to retrieve the ball in exchange for access to the dining table and the princess’s private chambers. After he has kept his promise, Sophie, after some hesitation, agrees in front of her birthday guests to let the Frog King eat from her plate. That evening, when he jumps onto her four-poster bed, she breaks his enchantment by throwing him against the wall, turning him back into a handsome prince named Floris. A month later, Sophie, now in love with him, accompanies him in his carriage as he travels to his homeland. At last, faithful servant Heinrich, who had bound his heart with three iron bands out of grief over the loss of his master, can cast off all his shackles.
