A well-mannered salesman named Fürst wins a bridal-trousseau order by presenting himself as the “Prince of Pappenheim,” then falls for the unhappy bride-to-be.

The story

Egon Fürst is an impeccably dressed, well-mannered salesman at Madeleine Pappenheim’s fashionable Berlin salon. When the salon receives an order for a bridal trousseau, Egon has secured it by introducing himself as the “Prince of Pappenheim”—though Fürst is his name, not a noble title. The order concerns Stefanie Vernon, a young dancer whom the supposed South American millionaire Juan Pablo de Gonzales intends to marry after courting her persistently. Egon falls in love with Stefanie, who seems unhappy about the impending marriage and has agreed only after Juan Pablo pressed her for a long time.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The eponymous Prince of Pappenheim is by no means a member of the high nobility; he is merely named Fürst—Egon Fürst, to be precise—and works as an impeccably and elegantly dressed salesman with excellent manners at Madeleine Pappenheim’s fashionable Berlin salon. One day, the salon receives an order for a bridal trousseau: the supposed South American millionaire Juan Pablo de Gonzales intends to marry a young dancer named Stefanie Vernon, whom he has courted for a long time and with great persistence. The enterprising salesman got the order only because he had introduced himself, not entirely falsely, as the “Prince of Pappenheim.” The capable employee promptly falls in love with the young woman, who does not seem at all happy and agreed to the impending marriage only after the oily South American had pressed her for a long time. Then, by chance, Egon discovers that the sleazy Southerner is a fraud and a crook. In truth, Stefanie is not a penniless little dancer at all, but an heiress to a fortune, and Juan Pablo de Gonzales, having discovered this, now hopes to put his own finances firmly back on their feet by marrying her. Thanks to Mr. Fürst von Pappenheim’s bold intervention, a marriage to the crook is prevented, and Egon himself can lead the young woman to the altar.
