Der Geist im Glas (2021)

Sophia, a woodcutter’s daughter, wants to become a doctor and is doing an internship with Malick, the village doctor. He is very pleased with her, and she is even allowed to keep the key to the medicine storeroom, on the condition that she does not touch anything in the medicine cabinet. One day, Malick receives a letter from Sophia’s father. He reads it in shock: her father can no longer pay for his daughter’s internship. Sophia, who is in the medicine storeroom at the time, hears a voice coming from the cabinet. She finds a glass bottle with the spirit Mercurius trapped inside. He begs her to let him out. As Sophia gazes at the bottle in disbelief, the village doctor enters the storeroom to deliver her father’s message. Sophia is startled and drops the bottle. Overjoyed to be free, the spirit disappears. His former master, the landowner Veith, is waiting for him. Malick is beside himself—20 years earlier, with great effort and at great risk, he and his sister Eda, an herbalist, had managed to imprison the spirit in the glass bottle. Mercurius and Veith had jointly subjugated and tormented the villagers. Sophia wants to make things right: because of her mishap, the village and its inhabitants are in great danger. Eda and her assistant Jakob want to help her trap the spirit in a new glass bottle and render him harmless again. The evil landowner had been trapped behind two magical gates all this time; now, with Mercurius’s help, he can turn the villagers back into his mindless slaves. Sophia and Jakob set out to outwit the spirit and imprison him again.
