A suspended, alcoholic detective is drawn back into a kidnapping investigation when another young girl disappears.

The story

Fredo Schulz has been suspended from the police force because he has failed to get his drinking problem under control. When Chief Inspectors Milan Filipovic and Lola Karras ask him to help after another child goes missing, Schulz initially refuses to return to duty. A paper parasol, the only lead in the case of seven-year-old Ashley Bols, catches his attention and persuades him to take charge of the task force. Schulz suspects Roland Bischoff, a man previously tried but never proven guilty, while the team hopes to find the other two missing children alive. As Schulz questions Bischoff and Ashley’s father, the case begins to reveal competing possibilities.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Fredo Schulz has been suspended from the police force because he has failed to get his drinking problem under control. Nevertheless, Chief Inspectors Milan Filipovic and Lola Karras ask him to help them, because yet another child has gone missing. Seven-year-old Ashley Bols is the third girl to disappear. Schulz initially refuses to return to duty, but grows curious when Filipovic shows him their only lead to the child: a paper parasol. Schulz is then convinced that Roland Bischoff must be the culprit—a man who has already stood trial but could never be proven guilty. Schulz takes charge of the task force, which secretly hopes to find the other two missing children alive as well, although Schulz is convinced they are dead. Schulz interrogates Bischoff, who denies having anything to do with Ashley Bols’s disappearance. Schulz doesn’t believe a word of it. He also speaks with Jimmy Olsen, Ashley Bols’s father, who has only visitation rights with the girl and could theoretically have abducted her. In fact, another culprit may be involved in the Bols case, since it differs from the two other abductions. To Schulz’s astonishment, wealthy hotel owner Felix Montabaur suddenly contacts the police, having received a ransom letter demanding money for his daughter. But he claims that the girl in the blackmailer’s evidence photo is Ashley Bols, not Montabaur’s daughter. It now turns out, however, that eight years earlier he had an affair with Ashley’s mother and is indeed the girl’s father. This gives rise to a completely new set of possibilities, because the only person besides the two biological parents who knows about this paternity is—Jimmy Olsen. At the same time, Schulz remains interested in solving the other two cases and tries to draw Bischoff out. He has word sent to him that two dead children have been found. Unable to imagine that the police have actually located the bodies, Bischoff wants to make sure, and thus leads Schulz and his colleagues straight to the hideout in the woods. He continues to deny having abducted a third child, which is true, because Jimmy Olsen, Ashley’s stepfather, is responsible for that. He set the whole thing up to extort money from Montabaur. But the situation is gradually becoming too dangerous for him, and he plans to give up. This puts the police on his trail; with Bischoff’s help, they have already located the girl’s hiding place. Just before the police move in, Bischoff loses his nerve and shoots his guard. While fleeing, he also shoots Olsen’s accomplice. After Ashley is rescued, Jimmy Olsen is arrested, and Bischoff is also caught and taken away.
