After returning to his remote island home, Hein must persuade a village court that he is who he says he is.

The story

After 14 years on the mainland, Hein returns by boat to the fishing village he calls home on a remote North Sea island. But the community does not recognize him—or seems unwilling to do so. His mother, Mechthild, has dementia; his much younger sister, Heide, and childhood friend Friedemann also fail to acknowledge him, despite their once-close bond. The villagers convene a court to determine whether Hein is truly who he claims to be. Across three days of hearings, he is given the opportunity to prove that he is not an impostor by facing a series of tests.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After 14 years on the mainland, Hein returns by boat to his fishing village on a remote North Sea island, which he calls home. To his surprise, no one in the village community can—or wants to—recognize him: not his mother Mechthild, who has dementia, nor his much younger sister Heide, nor his childhood friend Friedemann, even though they were once inseparable. To find out whether Hein really is who he claims to be, a village court is convened. Over three days of hearings, Hein has the chance to prove that he is not an impostor. He must face various tests.
