A dreamy boy’s distracted walk to school becomes an imagined adventure to protect his sports medals.
The story
Alex is a bright but dreamy boy whose principal reprimands him for repeatedly arriving late, overlooking his athletic promise as a medal prospect at the upcoming Spartakiad. The next morning he sets off on time with his friend Maren, but the journey to school is full of distractions. He encounters Horse Krüger, an old man making deliveries with his horse-drawn cart, and sees students from a rival school who are competing against his own. As Alex’s imagination takes over, ordinary events turn into a western-style adventure involving a wild mustang, villains, and the gold medals he hopes to win.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Alex is a bright but dreamy boy. At a school assembly, the principal reprimands him for having been late too often. His athletic achievements are not mentioned, which naturally annoys him. Only his PE teacher has high hopes for him, since Alex is one of the school’s best medal prospects at the upcoming Spartakiad. His “enemies” are the students from another school, which competes against his school in sports. The next day, Alex sets off for school with his friend Maren. He does leave on time every morning, but there is simply so much to see on the way to school. For instance, there’s Horse Krüger: a kindly old man who travels around with his old horse and does small delivery jobs with his horse-drawn cart. And then there are those students from the other school, trying to take the medals away from him. And so, in Alex’s imagination, a story takes shape. His bicycle becomes a wild mustang that he rides. The villains want to steal the gold—the medals. Alex is helped by his Native American blood brother, Red Kite. In the end, he manages to catch the villains and get the gold back. The only thing is, he’s late for school again.
