Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ingeborg Krafft, who is one day thrown out of the house by her husband, a Caucasian castle owner, decides to go to a convent. But she meets her childhood sweetheart, the explorer Hendryk Overland. He promises to marry her as soon as he returns from an expedition to New Zealand. In the meantime, Ingeborg stays with Dagmar Overland, Hendryk’s sister. One day, the women receive word that Hendryk and all the members of the expedition were killed by natives. On the same day, Dagmar’s child dies. Believing her to be incurably insane, they have Dagmar committed to an institution. Her husband, Harry, divorces her because of this. Ingeborg and Harry then fall in love. The day after their wedding, Hendryk, who was believed dead, unexpectedly appears. At the sight of him, Dagmar recovers. Desperate, Ingeborg tries to run away, but Harry stops her. She then chooses to take her own life by jumping out of a window.
