Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story centers on four people: Anja, a student; her husband, Leonhard, a judge; his former wife, Marlene, a doctor; and his best friend, Jan, a doctor who is also Marlene’s new husband. Anja and Leonhard meet at Marlene and Jan’s home, marry shortly afterward, and have a son, Daniel. But Anja’s desire for love goes unfulfilled in the relationship. One time, while she is not paying attention, Daniel scalds himself and is taken to the hospital. Afterward, Anja drinks increasingly heavily and begins an affair with Jan. When Marlene and Leonhard find out, Leonhard files for divorce. After suffering alcohol poisoning, Anja undergoes treatment for alcohol addiction. During an outing with the therapy group, Anja throws herself out of a window and dies.
