A hidden twin of King Louis XIV is raised in isolation as a power-hungry cardinal tries to avert a prophecy threatening the French state and dynasty.
The story
Cardinal Richelieu orders the twin brother of France’s King Louis XIV removed from court and taken to the countryside. Raised without knowing his parentage, the boy is kept like a prisoner. Richelieu’s motive is to prevent a prophecy from coming true: it predicts that the king’s brother will someday endanger the state and the dynasty. The brother, called Bertrand in this version, becomes the man in the iron mask, a disguise intended to keep guards and servants from noticing his resemblance to the king.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film largely follows the source material of the famous Dumas novel. Cardinal Richelieu orders that the twin brother of France’s King Louis XIV be removed from court and taken to the countryside. There he is raised without learning his true parentage and kept like a prisoner. The power-hungry churchman intends to prevent a prophecy from coming true: it foretells that the king’s brother will one day bring the state and the dynasty into grave danger. Soon the brother, called Bertrand here, becomes the man in the iron mask, which is meant to prevent guards and servants from noticing Bertrand’s resemblance to their monarch.
