The story

Town clerk Beckmesser wants to marry Evchen, daughter of goldsmith Veit Pogner, but she cannot stand him. Instead, she suggests marrying the much older master shoemaker Hans Sachs, who has long been in love with her and gladly accepts, already thinking of himself as her bridegroom. But Sachs faces a rival in his apprentice, Walther von Stolzing, a young man from a good family who also has his eye on Evchen. Like her, Walther wants to avoid an unwanted marriage.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The respected town clerk Beckmesser wants to marry Evchen, the daughter of the goldsmith Veit Pogner. But she cannot stand the bald-headed man and therefore makes the seemingly most implausible suggestion at first glance: that she marry the much older master shoemaker Hans Sachs. The old man has been in love with the pretty Eva for quite some time and joyfully agrees to the idea, since he already considers himself her bridegroom. The master of Nuremberg faces strong competition from none other than his apprentice, who is in fact called Walther von Stolzing and comes from a good family. He, too, has his eye on the respectable young woman. Like the girl, Walther also wants to avoid an unwanted marriage. When he tries to elope with Evchen Pogner, he is arrested. A poetry contest is to decide who may court Evchen. Hans Sachs wins the poetry competition, but gives his poem to young Walther when he realizes that Walther and Evchen belong together.
